How HYROX Finish Times Change With Age
Turn 35 and suddenly you’re racing a different field. Not because HYROX changes the stations, but because your finish time now gets compared against a different bracket of people. First-timers in the 40-44 group especially ask the same question: what’s actually realistic for someone my age?
HYROX itself still doesn’t publish a table of “good” times by age. What it publishes is the age group structure. What we can show you instead is ROXFIT’s own numbers, pulled from real Season 8 race results rather than a guess.
Your finish time isn’t just yours. It’s yours for your bracket.
Individual competition is split into roughly five-year age bands, from 16-24 up through 70+, with around eleven brackets in total. Doubles teams get grouped by the average age of both athletes. Relay only has two brackets. Age is set on race day, and it’s what determines who you’re actually ranked against, not the overall field.
That’s true for the vast majority of athletes. It doesn’t apply to Elite 15, the small handful of athletes racing at the very top of the sport globally. That’s its own category, worth knowing about so nobody pulls you up on it, but not something most people racing HYROX need to think about.
That’s the point of the system. A 50-year-old finishing in 1:35 isn’t losing to a 26-year-old finishing in 1:20. They’re not in the same race. The leaderboard by division and age group is where the real comparison happens, and it’s the one worth paying attention to.
Here’s what actually happens to your finish time by age
Across Season 8’s Open singles results, the fastest median times sit in the 25-29 bracket, but it’s closer than you’d think on either side of it. 30-34 is only half a minute behind. Under-24s are barely more than that. HYROX rewards experience enough that youth alone doesn’t win it.

The real age tax doesn’t show up until 35+, and even then it’s modest, a couple of minutes. From 40 onward it costs roughly two to three minutes per five-year band, and that acceleration picks up again past 50.
Women’s times drop off more gradually than men’s across the same span. From 25-29 to 60-64, men lose just over fourteen and a half minutes. Women lose just over ten. Whatever’s driving the age-related slowdown, it isn’t hitting both groups the same way.
One more shift worth knowing if you’re timing your first HYROX around this: the sport is getting younger. The fastest median times used to sit with the 30-34 bracket. Now it’s 25-29, and that’s tracked against a backdrop of HYROX stopping being a second sport people find in their 30s and starting to be something people pick up straight out of school or university. Expect the age where people peak to keep drifting down.
What actually changes as you age
A few things move the needle more than the calendar does. Aerobic capacity and running economy decline gradually, but a well-trained 45-year-old regularly beats an untrained 25-year-old, because base fitness and race-specific training matter more than the number on your birth certificate. Strength holds up longer than most people expect if you keep training for it, which matters on Sled Push, Sled Pull, and Sandbag Lunge. Recovery slows down, which usually shows up more in training load management than in race day itself. And pacing discipline, knowing when to hold back on the runs so you’ve got legs left for the Wall Balls, tends to improve with race experience, which partly offsets the physical decline.
None of that is a guarantee. It’s just the direction things tend to move, and it’s why the athletes who keep racing well into their 40s and 50s usually have the training habits to show for it, not a genetic exception.
